Chikuni fired?
by George Ntonya, 22 August 2005 - 06:50:10
Government has reportedly fired Secretary for Labour Lucias Chikuni but Chikuni insists he is still PS.
A highly placed source in the office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) said on Sunday Chikuni, who wound up work on Thursday, would still receive his terminal benefits to the month his contract was initially going to expire in 2006.
“Chikuni informed his minister, Ken Lipenga, of his fate through a memo in which he simply stated that his contract had ended,” said the source.
Lipenga and Chief Secretary for the Civil Service Charles Matabwa could not be reached for comment.
But Chikuni denied Sunday that government had terminated his services, insisting he was still PS for Labour, the position he held for less than six months following his transfer from Foreign Affairs.
Sources in the Civil Service attribute government review of Chikuni’s contract to a relief vehicle he continued using even after moving from the Department of Disaster Preparedness, Relief and Rehabilitation where he was commissioner, to Foreign Affairs, and thereafter stuck to the same car when he was transferred to Labour.
“It was wrong for Chikuni to take an official car from one ministry to another without OPC’s approval,” alleged the source, adding that the vehicle in question has since been returned to the Department of Disaster Preparedness, Relief and Rehabilitation.
Chikuni refused to comment on the vehicle issue.
