The Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament will start meeting on Wednesday in Lilongwe to work on procedures for impeaching a president ahead of the sitting of the National Assembly next month.
A source said on Sunday the meeting will take place for two days to draw procedures the committee will use to consult the public, experts, members of the executive branch of government and other stakeholders on the impeachment procedures.
Committee chair Atupele Muluzi could not be reached for his comment on Sunday but in an interview when the House had just adjourned early this month he said:
“We want to come up with procedures that are acceptable to all, and not those that suggest we are targeting an individual.”
The meeting failed to take place last Monday because Treasury had not released funding. The money was released late last week.
Malawi News quoted a member of the committee as suspecting that government was deliberately sabotaging the committee’s work due to the nature of the business it wanted to tackle.
The innuendo was dismissed by acting secretary to Treasury Patrick Kabambe. He accused Parliament secretariat of not sending committees’requirements in time.
The defence and security committee will also have a two-day meeting from Thursday next week to discuss structures of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).
The committee will also elect a new chair after Mzimba South MP Khumbo Kachali joined cabinet recently.
Other committees scheduled to meet are Health and Population, Transport and Public Works, Public Appointments and Declaration of Assets, and Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Meanwhile, the Public Appointments and Declaration of Assets Committee last week elected Lilongwe Mapuyu North MP (MCP) Joseph Njovuyalema as its new chair.
Njovuyalema takes over from Dedza Southwest MP (MCP) Kate Kainja who automatically lost her position and membership to the committee once she took a cabinet post as Education Minister.
