MDL promises more suprises
by Leonard Sharra, 19 August 2005 - 09:40:57
Malawi Distilleries Limited (MDL), distillers of a range of alcoholic spirits, say customers should look out for more surprises from the company, which has engaged in a series of activities in commemoration of 40 years of its existence in the country.
The first series of the activities has seen the company sponsoring a national ladies basketball tournament, holding night receptions and dishing out prizes all in the name of Tropical Cathay, a light alcoholic spirit from the company.
Over the weekend, MDL’s marketing team was in Lilongwe, where the company hosted a Ladies Night at French Corner, a popular entertainment haven situated some 10 kilometres outside Lilongwe City along Mchinji road.
Dubbed ‘Ladies Night’, the reception, attracted a K200 entry fee for men but ladies were allowed in free. Apart from the free entry, ladies were offered free tots of Cathay.
The party was graced by MDL’s general manager John Mbendela, who joined the night fun as he drove back to Blantyre from Lusaka in Zambia, where he went on a tour of duty. Some lucky winners won T-shirts and bottles of Cathay in a raffle draw conducted during the night.
Speaking in an interview, MDL’s Marketing Manager Wanangwa Thindwa said the objective of such events is to reward consumers. “We want to give back to the consumer as a gesture of appreciation for the support we have been getting during the 40 years of our existence.
This is just the beginning of the journey and we have lined up our old brands like Malawi Gin, Premier Brandy, Powers No.1 and Cathay. We are taking all these brands to the customers and there will be different approaches with each brand,” said Thindwa.
According to Thindwa, the fun will go on up to around February next year.
Justifying the gathering of young sports ladies, who were joined at the night party by other fun mongers from the city, Thindwa said: “Cathay is a socially responsible brand. It is a light spirit, which means ladies can take it at home peacefully. This brand brings in fun and togetherness.”
