Taiwan’s new Ambassador to Malawi James Chuang said on Saturday the four locomotives his government pledged to donate to Malawi are being reconditioned and will arrive in the country in January 2006.
Chuang said the locomotives will play a key role in the country’s transport system saying it will ease transport to and from the Indian Ocean coast port of Nacala in Mozambique where Malawi sends and receives goods.
He added that linking Malawi to the sea will see more investors coming into the country because it would be easy to export and import goods.
President Bingu wa Mutharika sought assistance from Taiwan early this year to develop the Nacala corridor and the government of Taiwan pledged support.
Besides the locomotives, Taiwan also pledged helicopters to the Malawi Defence Forces.
Chuang made the remarks at Protea Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre where he hosted a luncheon for journalists and outlined issues bordering on the Taiwan-Malawi relationship and his country’s quest to join the United Nations.
Malawi is one of the 27 countries in the world with diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
From the relationship, the country has benefited from Taiwanese expertise in the areas of health, agriculture, technology and training.
