Sharma promises Malawi National team new Nike kit
by Chisomo Kachapila, 08 June 2005 - 14:22:48

The Flames’s days of donning archaic uniforms will soon be over. A Blantyre-based businessman Bob Sharma of Sharma Electrical Engineering, has offered to sponsor a new Nike-designed outfit for the soccer envoys..
The kit pegged at over $8,200 ( K1 million), is expected to be worn in the Flames’s World Cup/African Cup qualifiers home game against Botswana on June 18.
In an interview yesterday, Sharma said his company would indeed purchase Nike tracksuits, shorts and shirts for the Flames after being approached by Fam president Walter Nyamilandu for assistance.
“He (Nyamilandu) told us the uniform the team is using is 10 years old and we agreed to buy them a new uniform. We are not going to gain any mileage, but they’re in a problem and as a Malawian company we thought we could assist them,” explained Sharma.
“Nike had wanted to have specific players’ names at the back of the shirts but Fam objected because the players keep changing,” added Sharma.
Fam general secretary Roosevelt Mpinganjira also confirmed the soccer gods had smiled on the country’s flag carriers.
“It’s a good gesture, the uniform our team has been using is really of low quality, sometimes even below that of local clubs. Our intention was to use the kit for the Botswana game but we are not sure if we will meet that target,” said Mpinganjira.
Mpinganjira added that in consultation with the sponsors, Fam has plans to place orders of the same kit for supporters to buy.
