Synod warns nurses against casual sex
by Edwin Nyirongo, 25 May 2005 - 14:00:26
The Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) has warned male and female nurses against engaging in casual sex due to the proximity of their hostels.
The Synod’s acting general secretary Rev. Maurice Munthali said this at Ekwendeni in Mzimba during the opening of an K8 million 22-bed male nurses of Ekwendeni School of Nursing.
Munthali said in many cases students whose hostels are close tend to forget their mission and start engaging into sexual relationships which affects their performances at school.
“Please take yourselves as students with the agenda to fulfil and bringing you together should not be interpreted to mean you should be making sexual relationships. This is the place of God and try to keep it holy,” he said.
The synod boss reminded the students that their work is spiritual because they deal with the lives of people who were created by God and that whatever they do to them will be rewarded.
He called on the government to provide the college with tutors saying what the church is doing is complementing the government responsibility.
Ireen Holte, resident representative of the Norwegian Church Aid—one of the donors, lamented that the health system in the country is substandard and needs to be revamped by training more medical personnel.
She noted that it was a challenge for men to be pursuing a female dominated career and that it is good for gender.
Main donor of the funds for the hostel, Robin Arnot, who is chief executive of Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society of Scotland, promised continued assistance to the church to continue the relationship which has been there for the past 160 years.
Arnot also said his society has raised 24,000 British pounds for the construction of a maternity ward at Enukweni Mission Hospital. He also pledged to provide all the furniture and equipment for the ward.
