Taulo brothers to spark squash event
by Oris Chimenya, 10 May 2005 - 14:51:24
Malawi’s top and second seeded squash stars Aubrey and Julius Taulo will this weekend top the billing at the Squash Super Challenge event organised by Squash Malawi.
The event will take place from Friday to Sunday at Blantyre Sports Club.
The competition is expected to produce sparks as the country’s top 32 players from Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre are expected to be at the event.
Taulo, who is also Nico Open defending champion, said on Monday, he intends to defend his title to maintain his position.
“I am ready since I started training last week. I know my fellow players, including my brother Julius, are equally good, but I won’t give away the title on a silver platter,” he said.
Squash Malawi president Gordon Benbow said in a separate interview: “The prize money will be for the top four players and plates one and two, but we also hope that positions five to eight and plate three to eight will receive small prizes. Seeds 1-8 have already been drawn and the seeds 9-16 will be drawn on Tuesday before drawing seeds 17-32 against the top six.”
Benbow disclosed that the other top seeds apart from the Taulo brothers, are Donald Gondwe, Chiku Mkutumula, James Matewere, Gary Evans, Oswin Kasunda and himself.
Squash Malawi publicity secretary Edward Mponda and another Taulo brother, Joseph will be among the 9-16 seeds while national tennis coach Thompson Mtengula and another promising star Haxon Methiwa are expected to appear in the 17-32 bracket.
According to the draft draw, four players namely Rob Ferguson, Rob Tate, Mike Mathias and Mike Winn will be on reserve and will take the place of any seeded player who fails to turn up.
