Hotel suspends two over missing money
by Olivia Kumwenda, 06 May 2005 - 11:45:14
Mount Soche Hotel has suspended two accounts staff for allegedly misappropriating about $15,000 (K1.7 million).
According to the Blantyre Fiscal Police, the accounts staff— auditor Davie Chimahoza and cashier Frank Kumadzi— were arrested by the police in March this year after an internal audit showed loss of the money.
The police said the two are accused of fraudulently cashing un-receipted cheques for services rendered.
“In some cases when one customer pays using a cheque and one pays in cash they would replace the cash with the cheque and it would look like only one person had pay,” alleged the Police source.
He also said: “We also have evidence that the two had been under-banking cash received from customers, for example instead of banking K80,000 they would bank less than that and keep the rest.”
The two, who are currently on court bail, have been charged with theft by public servant and will appear before Blantyre Magistrate’s Court on the 18 of May 2005.
Company secretary for Sunbird Tourism Limited Maureen Kachingwe confirmed the development Thursday in a separate interview.
