Aford has expressed regret that its suspended president Chakufwa Chihana voted against the confirmation of the inspector general of police Mary Nangwale.
In a statement signed by the party’s publicity secretary Khwauli Msiska, Chihana is being condemned for allegedly demonstrating a consistent pattern of arrogance and unilateral behaviour. The party says it cannot tolerate that.
“Alliance for Democracy (Aford) is extremely disappointed by Parliament decision not to confirm Mrs Mary Nangwale (nee Mvula) of Enukweni in Mzimba as Inspector General of Police.
“Aford is particularly shocked and dismayed by the behaviour of Hon Chakufwa Chihana, the former party president in adding his vote against Mrs Nangwale to ensure that she is not effectively confirmed,” reads the statement in part.
Msiska says as a party that sponsored Chihana to Parliament, it was dismayed that at a time when they were holding a caucus to take a position on Nangwale, Chihana was actively participating in a purely UDF function.
Msiska also condemned Chihana for wrongly making the public believe that he is a champion of women empowerment.
“He had the audacity to even enquire into some irrelevant personal information regarding Mrs Nangwale’s marital status and size of her family!
“Meanwhile, following his vote against Mrs Nangwale, the Aford grassroots leadership in Enukweni in Mzimba has communicated to the party leadership expressing its shock and bewilderment that Hon. Chihana could so callously participate in curtailing the otherwise shinning and exemplary achievement by one of their daughters,” adds the statement.
Parliament last week Wednesday rejected the confirmation of Nangwale. Government appointed her deputy Often Thyolani to act.
However, on Thursday Nangwale was granted an injunction by the High Court in Lilongwe to continue working as IG.
