Tembo queries Kainja quitting |

MCP President John Tembo, who is leader of the opposition, said on Thursday in Parliament he was surprised by media reports that Dedza South West MP Kate Kainja had resigned as secretary general of the party over the National Assembly’s rejection of Mary Nangwale as Inspector General of Police.
Tembo said he was surprised because the resignation letter he got from Kainja was dated March 29, 2005, a day before Nangwale was rejected by the House. He said the record has to be set straight.
“The reports are surprising because the letter I have is not dated yesterday, but March 29, 2004,” said Tembo.
Kainja was on her feet to react to Tembo’s remarks.
“My name has been mentioned and I need to respond,” demanded Kainja.
Speaker Munyenyembe said the chance would be granted at a later time. He did not specify.
Kainja declined to comment on the issue outside the House for fear of being misunderstood.
An MCP source said a problem emerged during the party’s meeting when some MPs wanted Kainja to comment on reports linking her to a prospective cabinet post in President Bingu wa Mutharika’s cabinet.
