Chilumpha hails Anglican bishop
by Zainah Liwanda, 14 March 2005 - 14:43:04
Vice president Cassim Chilumpha has hailed the late bishop of the Anglican diocese of Lake Malawi Peter Nyanja for his role in fighting for change in the country.
Speaking in Lilongwe on Friday during Nyanja’s funeral, Chilumpha said Nyanja was among church leaders who ensured that the transition form one party state to multi partyism was peaceful and in the interest of all Malawians.
“Late Nyanja was not only a bishop but very instrumental in fighting for change, by ensuring that the change was peaceful and in the interest of all Malawians,” said Chilumpha.
The vice president, who represented president Bingu wa Mutharika at the funeral, described Nyanja as a person who was down to earth, adding that he said the truth without fear or favour.
Archbishop Bernard Malango said the Anglican church had lost a very important person who was not only the longest serving bishop of the lake Malawi diocese, but Central Africa Province as a whole.
Malango asked the youths to emulate Nyanja’s example by being exemplary not only in church issues but developmental issues as well.
Nyanja died on Tuesday last week after battling with prostrate cancer. He was laid to rest at St. Thomas Anglican church on Friday.
The funeral was graced by people of all walks of life including bishops from Zambia, Mozambique, PPM president Aleke Banda, former vice president Justin Malewezi and Health Minister Hetherwick Ntaba.
