Anglican bishop dies
by Zainah Liwanda, 10 March 2005 - 17:05:57
Bishop of the Anglican diocese of lake Malawi Peter Nathaniel Nyanja died on Wednesay at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) after battling with cancer.
Nyanja’s death comes a day after that of Mangochi diocese Roman Catholic Bishop Luciano Nervi who died on Tuesday at the Blantyre Adventist Hospital and will be buried on Thursday.
KCN hospital director Damison Kathyola confirmed Nyanja’s death, saying he had prostrate cancer.
“Bishop Nyanja died yesterday at night. He was suffering from prostrate cancer. I cannot remember exactly when he was admitted here,” said Kathyola
Nyanja, who was bound to retire in June this year according to the diocese’s treasurer George Willow, was the longest-serving bishop of the Anglican diocese of lake Malawi.
Willow said Nyanja underwent radiotherapy in the United Kingdom in June last year but his condition worsened in December when he became paralysed and could not even move his legs.
Willow said Nyanja was ordained priest in 1972 and consecrated bishop in 1978.
“He has battled prostrate cancer but his condition worsened in December last year when he was paralysed. He was quite good, especially in financial management and sharing of spiritual ideas,” said Willow.
Willow further described the late Nyanja as a person who was down to earth, whom he said would seek views of juniors in the diocese and take them seriously.
He said Nyanja was born in 1940 and would be laid to rest on Friday at St. Peter’s cemetery in Lilongwe, saying they are still negotiating with the city assembly.
“We want to bury him near the our church so we are negotiating with city assembly for the St Peters cemetery,” he said.
He is survived by a wife and nine children.
