Wai to be buried on Saturday
by Tadala Makata Kakwesa, 10 March 2005 - 16:42:46

The body of World Bank resident representative Dunstan Wai will be led to rest on Saturday in Northern Virginia in the United States of America, the Bank’s country director Hartwig Schafer said in an interview in Lilongwe Wednesday.
Wai died on Monday in the United States where he went for medical check up and was diagnosed with liver cancer, according to Schafer .
Schafer has described the death of Dunstan Wai as a big loss and that they have lost a courageous man who introduced the fight against corruption in the country without fear.
The that one of Wai’s achievements was to point out the issue of corruption to government and he made sure it was seriously addressed.
“He was one of the first people to mention the issue of corruption in the Bank at a time when the Bank was not talking about corruption. Dustan really brought the issue up and he was not afraid and this showed his strong characters,” explained Schafer.
He described Wai as a person who helped the World Bank to have a shared approach in order to sustain growth and improve the lives of the common people throughout the country.
“He had a talent to put together the most interesting relationship comprising ambassadors, private business, the legal justices, politicians civil servants and was a great a diplomat,” said Schafer.
Wai was born in Southern Sudan in 1944. He studied at Oxford University and graduated with a degree in philosophy. He had a PhD in Political Economy and Economic Development from Harvard University.
Before joining World Bank, he worked for Rockefeller Foundation as a research fellow and later worked for University of California as a visiting professor.
He joined the Bank in 1984 and last year received an award after working for the Bank for 20 years.
Wai came to Malawi three and half years ago.
He is survived by a wife Eunice and four children, two girls and two boys.
Efforts to seek government’s comment on the death of Wai proved futile as some officials were reported out of the office while others are in Brussels with the State President.
