Nginjale Young Tough Ben Chitenje of Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions on Sunday got the best of Jobson Adam and pummelled him in a hotly contested 10-round non-title bout staged at the BAT Ground in Blantyre.
The fight was well patronised with many families coming with their children. But the show was marred by a poorly constructed ring which collapsed before the end of the bout.
Nginjale, weighing 57 kg got a unanimous decision from the judges amassing 95 points against Adam’s 93 points, who weighed 55 kg.
Adam received hard-hitting punches from Chitenje who was very focused. Adam’s strategy to reserve his energy for the last rounds clearly failed.
Right from the first round, Nginjale, whose stamina was better than his opponent used his long reach to full advantage pummelling Adams with dangerous punches.
Adam, who belongs to Lilongwe-based Fast Boxing Promotions, blamed his loss on the hastily constructed ring which delayed the start of the fight.
“The bout was tough. I accept the loss but I blame the ring because it was in a very bad condition,” said Adam.
But Chitenje brushed off Adam’s claims, saying the ring should not be a reason for Adam’s loss.
“That is not true. The bout was very tough and I am happy to have beaten him finally,” said Chitenje, who leaves for South Africa next month for another fight with unnamed opponent.
Commenting on the ring, organiser of the fight Ben Chitenje, who is director for Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions (MLBP) and father to Nginjale, said: “There was a football match and we constructed it very quickly”.
Chitenje added he intends to organise another preparatory bout for his son.
But in an interview on Monday, Sports Council executive secretary George Jana blamed the organiser for not using another ring being kept at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).
“We have a ring at the BYC but they did not approach us to use it. I could not have helped them,” said Jana, adding they had written the Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) informing them that if they do not have the proper equipment, they should not organise bouts.
Maba officials could not be reached for comment, but Chitenje said he was not happy with the BYC ring, saying many of its steel bars and planks had been removed.
The show was curtain raised by seven supporting bouts involving Boniface Stenala and Walasi Mkandawire; Hajson Mkoka and Brazio Dalison; Elias Muhone and Ernest Mwase; Collings Chimangeni and Liden Chibayo; Vutso Dula and Mike Jeremiah; Beston Masese and James Mkandawire; Twaibu Binali and Komani Chimpango. |
